The University of Haifa seeks to establish a center for the research of democracy and human rights which will stand as a living memorial to the life and legacy of Israel’s first Arab Israeli Supreme Court Justice, Salim Joubran.

Justice Joubran, who retired as Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, served on the court from 2003 to 2017 and was renowned for his formidable commitment to democracy, human rights, and civil liberties.

The asylum-seeking community in Israel numbers some 36,000 men, women and children. Most non-Jewish African asylum-seekers have been granted "conditional release" visas, which are not valid work permits in Israel. With limited economic opportunities, cultural and language barriers, and difficulties navigating the Israeli legal system, the community urgently needs compassionate and high-quality legal representation.

The Legal Clinics for Law and Social Change were established with the aim of utilizing law to promote social justice and educate the next generation of ethical, socially responsible lawyers. Recently, the Clinics have taken on more pro bono cases to assist Israel's refugee and asylum-seeking community.

In response to Israel's refugee crisis, UofH researchers have developed a highly innovative, evidence-based initiative to help refugees heal, one moment at a time.

The Moments of Refuge Project is a first-of-its-kind mindfulness- and compassion-based intervention program that is trauma-sensitive and socio-culturally adapted for diverse forcibly displaced people in Israel and around the world.

The program is now set to play an important role in the growing global refugee crisis.
